Our verdict
The Vertuo Lattissima is the Vertuo machine for people who take milk. It comes with a 0.5-litre milk carafe, and at the press of a button it makes a cappuccino, latte macchiato, espresso macchiato or plain hot foam, alongside the usual Vertuo coffees that it sizes by reading each pod’s barcode. De’Longhi makes it and sells it as the ENV300; Nespresso sells the same model in its own shop.
The trade-offs are size and routine. It is the heaviest and widest pod machine we list, at about 6.3 kg and 19 cm across. After every milk drink a rinse alert lights up, and you turn the knob to run a rinse into a container under the outlet. Nespresso quotes about 30 seconds to heat up (De’Longhi says 25), against about three for the Vertuo Up. And if you leave the descale alert until it blinks fast, the machine locks itself after a few more drinks and won’t brew again until it has been descaled.
Cleaning and running costs
The carafe comes apart into six pieces for the top rack of a dishwasher. Without one, Nespresso says to soak them for 30 minutes in water at about 50 °C with a mild, unscented detergent, then rinse. Leftover milk can be kept in the fridge, but wash the carafe fully if milk has sat in it for more than 24 hours. Descaling takes about 20 minutes and two units of Nespresso descaler, which is one Descaling Kit (142420), with water to the descale mark and the pipe stored at the back of the machine plugged into the carafe connector. Set the water hardness first, with the test strip from the quick start guide and a three-second press of the hot foam button: the right setting means fewer descales. For the best froth, Nespresso recommends fresh, pasteurised semi-skimmed milk straight from the fridge; plant-based drinks work, though the froth varies.
Who should look elsewhere
If you drink your coffee black, the Nespresso Vertuo Up brews the same pods in a body 12 cm wide and is ready in about three seconds. If you would rather set the milk yourself, the Sage Nespresso Creatista Plus steams it with an automatic wand to a chosen temperature and texture, though it runs on Original capsules rather than Vertuo pods.
Compare it with every pod machine we track, or see where it sits among the best pod coffee machines.

Vertuo Lattissima questions
How do I descale the Nespresso Vertuo Lattissima?
Run the descale programme when the descale alert blinks. Nespresso’s steps use two units of its descaler with water to the descale mark, about a litre, and the descaling pipe from the back of the machine plugged into the carafe connector. The cycle takes about 20 minutes. One Nespresso Descaling Kit (142420) holds two units, so it covers one descale on this machine.
Can the Vertuo Lattissima milk carafe go in the dishwasher?
Yes. The carafe comes apart into six parts, and all of them can go in the top rack. Without a dishwasher, Nespresso says to soak the parts for 30 minutes in water at about 50 °C with a mild, unscented detergent, then rinse. Run the rinse after every milk drink, and wash the carafe fully if milk has sat in it for more than 24 hours.
Why has my Vertuo Lattissima stopped brewing until I descale?
Because the descale alert was left too long. When the orange descale light blinks fast, the manual says only a few drinks are left before the machine locks itself to prevent damage, and it won’t brew again until it has been descaled. Setting the right water hardness with the test strip makes the alerts arrive at the right interval for your water.
Which milk froths best in the Vertuo Lattissima?
Fresh, pasteurised semi-skimmed cow’s milk straight from the fridge, at about 4 °C, gives the best froth, according to Nespresso. Plant-based drinks also work, but the froth varies with the drink and its temperature, so it is worth trying a few. Whatever you use, put leftovers back in the fridge and run the rinse after each milk drink.
Why are the milk buttons blinking on my Vertuo Lattissima?
It depends on the pattern. If the three milk buttons blink one after another, the machine is too hot: let it cool before the next drink. If they blink together, the water tank is empty and needs refilling. A fast-blinking orange light is something else: that is the descale alert, and the machine will soon stop brewing until you descale.
