Our verdict

The Vertuo Up is where we would start with Nespresso Vertuo. Nespresso quotes a heat-up of about three seconds, against about 30 seconds for the Vertuo Next, and pairs it with a 1.4-litre tank that swivels round for refilling and a basket that holds up to 18 used espresso pods, all in a body 12 cm wide. Like every Vertuo machine it reads the barcode on each pod and sets the cup size itself, across seven sizes from ristretto to carafe.

Its extra button is Coffee Creations, a concentrated brew meant to go over ice or into milk. It doesn’t run with ristretto, carafe or Bianco milk-recipe pods, and Nespresso advises against it for Alto pods. There is no milk system, so milky drinks need a separate frother, and the machine takes Vertuo pods only: capsules made for Nespresso Original machines won’t fit.

Cleaning and running costs

Day to day, empty and rinse the maintenance module and the pod basket. Nespresso says a little coffee or water left there after brewing is normal for the vertical brewing design, not a leak. Run the cleaning cycle about once a month, or sooner if grounds turn up in the cup. Descaling starts when the maintenance button glows steady orange: one unit of Nespresso’s descaling liquid (the Descaling Kit, 142420, holds two) in 0.6 litres of water, then a rinse with a full tank and ten minutes’ rest, about 15 minutes in all. Set your water hardness in the Nespresso Smart App, because the machine has no hardness setting of its own and the alert is timed from it. Used pods go back to Nespresso free in its recycling bags.

Who should look elsewhere

If most of your drinks are milky, the Nespresso Vertuo Lattissima adds a one-touch milk carafe on the same pods, in a wider, heavier body. If you drink espresso-sized coffee and want the wider choice of third-party capsules made for Nespresso Original machines, the Nespresso Essenza Mini is far narrower, though it brews only two cup sizes.

Vertuo Up questions

How do I descale the Nespresso Vertuo Up?

Descale when the maintenance button glows steady orange. Nespresso’s cycle uses one unit of its descaling liquid in 0.6 litres of water, then a rinse with a full tank and ten minutes’ rest, about 15 minutes in all. The Descaling Kit (142420) holds two units and suits both Original and Vertuo machines; Nespresso advises against vinegar and home remedies. Setting your water hardness in the app times the alert to your water.

Why is there coffee in the Vertuo Up’s pod basket?

It’s normal, not a leak. Nespresso says the vertical brewing design leaves a little coffee or water in the maintenance module after each brew. Empty and rinse the module and the pod basket every day, and run the cleaning cycle about once a month, or sooner if coffee grounds appear in your cup or the machine has stood unused for a long time.

Why does my Vertuo Up brew only water?

It couldn’t read the pod’s barcode, so it ran about 40 ml of rinse water, which isn’t meant for drinking. Nespresso’s fix is a fresh, undamaged pod, put in the right way round. If you were starting a maintenance cycle instead, one orange blink means the tank needs water and five blinks mean a pod is still inside: open and close the lever first.

Can the Vertuo Up froth milk?

No, it has no milk system. Nespresso sells a separate frother, the Aeroccino3 (3694-GB-BK), for hot and cold milk; pairing it is Nespresso’s general advice for its machines without milk rather than an instruction for the Vertuo Up. The Coffee Creations button brews a concentrated shot to pour over milk or ice. For milk at a press, the Vertuo Lattissima has a carafe built in.

How do I recycle Vertuo pods in the UK?

Nespresso takes used Vertuo pods back free in its recycling bags: book a Royal Mail collection, drop the bag at a Royal Mail location, or hand it in at a Nespresso boutique. Nespresso also points to Podback drop-off points, where aluminium pods go in the white bags. Drain the pods first; Podback says there’s no need to scoop out the grounds.

Is the Vertuo Up the same as the De’Longhi ENV200?

Yes. Nespresso’s manual lists one machine under several codes: the De’Longhi ENV200, the Krups XN940 and XN941, and Nespresso’s own MC1 and MD1. Colours and maker codes change; the machine doesn’t. The version we track is De’Longhi’s ENV200.GY in anthracite, so check the code when you compare listings and you’ll know you are looking at the same Vertuo Up.
