Our score: 8.2 out of 10 Research-based, not lab-tested

Updated

  • One-touch (automatic) Milk system
  • 1.4 L Water tank
  • 38.5 cm Height
  • 2 years Warranty

Pros

  • Two 250 g bean hoppers swap over, so two kinds of beans can sit ready
  • 16 one-touch drinks on a 3.5 in colour touchscreen, with four user profiles
  • LatteCrema Hot carafe froths and pours milk drinks automatically
  • Takes De'Longhi's DLSC002 filter, which it says cuts descaling by about a fifth
  • Optional LatteCrema Cool set adds six cold milk drinks

Cons

  • 1.4 litre water tank is small for a busy household

  • No app control, unlike the Eletta Explore
  • Some owners report lukewarm milk drinks, even on the hottest setting
Best for
Couples or households who like different beans (say, regular and decaf) and want one-touch milk drinks without paying for a flagship.
Not for
Large families making many drinks back to back, who will refill the small tank often, or anyone who wants to start drinks from a phone.

Our verdict

The Rivelia is the machine we would point most households to first. It covers what buyers ask for most often: cappuccino and latte at one touch from the LatteCrema Hot carafe, sixteen drinks on a colour touchscreen, and four user profiles so each person’s strength and cup size are remembered. Its stand-out feature is the pair of removable 250 g bean hoppers. Keep decaf or a second roast in the spare one, and the Switch mode empties the grinder before you change over, so the two coffees don’t mix. De’Longhi says its Bean Adapt Technology then adjusts grind, dose and temperature to the beans.

The compromises are modest. The water tank is small for a busy kitchen, there is no app, and iced milk drinks need De’Longhi’s LatteCrema Cool Upgrade Set (DLSC032), sold separately. The complaint we saw most often in owner reviews, milk drinks that arrive lukewarm, is worth weighing before you buy.

Cleaning and running costs

De’Longhi’s own consumables fit the Rivelia. The DLSC002 water filter sits in the tank and lasts up to two months; De’Longhi says it lets you descale about a fifth less often. Programme your water hardness at set-up so the descale reminder comes at the right time, and descale with Decalk Care (DLSC500), De’Longhi’s lactic-acid descaler, sold in 500 ml bottles of five doses. De’Longhi warns that an unsuitable descaler can cause faults its guarantee won’t cover. MultiClean (DLSC550) cleans the milk circuit, carafe included, and the grounds container needs emptying after about ten coffees.

Owner reports

Among the owner reviews we read on De’Longhi’s UK site and eBay, the two hoppers, the guided touchscreen and easy cleaning drew the most praise. The most common complaint was temperature: several owners said lattes and cappuccinos came out lukewarm even on the hottest setting, and a couple reheat them. A handful also reported faults in the first months, from a machine that arrived dead to one that stopped at about four months, and a few said De’Longhi was slow to arrange a repair. That is a handful of early reports, not a failure rate. If a fault shows within six months, the Consumer Rights Act presumes it was there at delivery, and your claim is with the retailer.

Who should look elsewhere

If you want hot and cold milk drinks and an app in one box, the De’Longhi Eletta Explore adds both. If cappuccino at a touch and a milk jug that goes in the dishwasher are enough, the Philips 3300 LatteGo does that for less. Compare it with every bean-to-cup machine we track, or see how it ranks in our pick of the best bean-to-cup coffee machines.

De'Longhi Rivelia questions

Can I keep two different coffee beans in the De'Longhi Rivelia?

Yes. The Rivelia comes with two interchangeable 250 g bean hoppers, so you can keep regular beans in one and decaf or a lighter roast in the other. Before you swap, the Switch mode empties the grinder so the two coffees don’t mix. De’Longhi’s product data also says it takes pre-ground coffee, which suits an occasional third coffee.

Does the Rivelia make cold milk drinks?

Not out of the box. The Rivelia comes with the LatteCrema Hot carafe for hot milk drinks. De’Longhi sells the LatteCrema Cool Upgrade Set (DLSC032) separately: a cold-milk carafe and four glasses that add six cold milk drinks to machines with LatteCrema Hot, and De’Longhi lists Rivelia models as compatible.

Which water filter fits the De'Longhi Rivelia?

De’Longhi’s DLSC002 water filter, softener and purifier, which De’Longhi says suits all its automatic coffee makers. It lasts up to two months, and De’Longhi says it lets you descale about 20 per cent less often. Programme your water hardness on the machine as well, so the descale reminder comes at the right interval for your area.

Will the Rivelia fit under my kitchen wall cupboards?

Measure your gap first. De’Longhi lists the Rivelia at 38.5 cm tall, 24.5 cm wide and 43 cm deep. Check the space between your worktop and the underside of the cupboards, and leave room above the machine to take out and refill the bean hoppers. The tallest cup that fits under the spout is 14 cm, which matters if you use travel mugs.

Which descaler should I use in a De'Longhi Rivelia?

De’Longhi’s own Decalk Care (DLSC500), a lactic-acid descaler that De’Longhi recommends for all its coffee machines; one 500 ml bottle holds five doses. Descale when the machine asks, which depends on your water hardness. De’Longhi warns that an unsuitable descaler or wrong descaling can cause faults its guarantee does not cover, so check before buying a generic one.

What warranty does the De'Longhi Rivelia have?

Two years as standard from De’Longhi UK. Registering the machine on De’Longhi’s site keeps a warranty record and gives you access to support, but De’Longhi mentions no extension for registering. Separately, the Consumer Rights Act gives you rights against the retailer: a fault that shows within six months of delivery is presumed to have been there from the start.
