Our verdict

The AromaFresh Pro X is for people who buy whole beans and want them ground fresh for every jug. A ceramic grinder with 11 fineness settings sits under a bean container of about 180 g, enough for two or three full tanks, and it grinds only the amount for the number of cups you choose. Strength 0 switches the grinder off, so pre-ground coffee works too.

Two start times can be stored and picked with the Timer button, and the keep-warm runs from 10 to 60 minutes in 10-minute steps. The 1.25 litre tank lifts out for filling, and it takes standard 1×4 papers. Melitta’s page for this model states a three-year manufacturer’s guarantee, though the store’s banner shows two years for its range, so check the guarantee terms when you buy.

The costs are height and upkeep. At 46.3 cm it is the tallest machine in our filter range, the bean lid is on top, and the grinder needs brushing out from time to time. The coffee also sits in a glass jug on a hotplate rather than in a thermal jug.

Grinder care and descaling

Brush out the grinder when it looks dirty, then open the ground-coffee chute flap from the Clean mill menu and brush that too; the grinding ring can be rinsed but must dry completely before it goes back. Very oily or caramelised beans can clog the grinder, and ground coffee must never go in the bean container. Melitta asks for the descaling programme every four weeks or when a red drop shows: at least 500 ml of Melitta Anti Calc for filter machines, about 25 minutes, then two rinses. Melitta UK sells its Anti Calc as a 240 g powder for filter machines and kettles (article 6762482). Slow, rattling brews or a leaking drip stop also mean it is due.

Who should look elsewhere

If your wall cupboards are low, measure first or choose a machine without a grinder: the Melitta LOOK V Therm Timer stands 36.7 cm and keeps coffee in an insulated jug. If you already grind your own beans, the Moccamaster KBG Select is the simpler brewer with the longer warranty.

Compare it with every filter coffee machine we track, read which type of coffee machine suits you, or see how often to descale in a hard-water area.

Melitta AromaFresh Pro X questions

Can I use pre-ground coffee in the AromaFresh Pro X?

Yes. Set the strength to 0, which switches the grinder off, and put about 6–8 g of ground coffee per cup straight into a 1×4 paper in the filter. Never tip ground coffee into the bean container: Melitta’s manual warns that it can damage the grinder.

How do I clean the grinder on the AromaFresh Pro X?

Brush it out whenever it looks dirty. Then choose Clean mill in the menu to open the flap on the ground-coffee chute, and brush that as well. The grinding ring can be rinsed under water, but Melitta says it must be completely dry before you refit it. The manual also warns that very oily or caramelised beans can clog the grinder.

How often should I descale the AromaFresh Pro X?

Every four weeks, or sooner if a red drop appears on the display. Use at least 500 ml of Melitta Anti Calc for filter machines, run the programme for about 25 minutes, then rinse twice. Slow brewing with rattling, or a leaking drip stop, are also signs of limescale. Melitta UK sells its Anti Calc as a 240 g powder (article 6762482).

Will the Melitta AromaFresh Pro X fit under my kitchen cupboards?

Measure first. Melitta lists it at 46.3 cm tall, 26.8 cm wide and 25.2 cm deep, the tallest of the filter machines we track, and the beans go in through a lid on top, so you need room to open it or space to pull the machine forward. Melitta does not say how much clearance the open lid needs.

Why is my Melitta AromaFresh grinder blocked?

The manual names two causes to avoid: very oily or caramelised beans, which can clog it, and ground coffee put in the bean container, which can damage it. Brush out the grinder and the chute from the Clean mill menu. If the coffee tastes off rather than the grinder jamming, change the fineness and grind amount in the Mill menu; a system error message means calling Melitta’s hotline.
