Our verdict

The LOOK V Therm Timer covers what most filter households ask for: an insulated stainless steel jug instead of a hotplate, a timer, and a descaling programme you set to your water’s hardness. It stands 36.7 cm tall, has a removable 1.25 litre tank and, by Melitta’s technical data, switches itself off 15 minutes after brewing.

Day to day there is little to set. Standard 1×4 papers go in the filter insert, and Melitta suggests 6–8 g of ground coffee per large cup with the AromaSelector dial in the middle, turned clockwise for milder coffee or anticlockwise for stronger. The tank’s markings count small cups of about 85 ml and large cups of about 125 ml, so its 10 cups are large ones, and the machine brews all the water you put in.

The gaps are clear ones: Melitta gives no figure for how long the jug keeps coffee hot, there is no grinder or temperature control, the warranty is two years, and unplugging clears both the clock and the timer.

Cleaning and running costs

Set the water hardness once. There are four levels and the machine leaves the factory on the hardest; your water company can tell you your own (Thames Water, for one, says all the water it supplies is hard). When the CALC lamp lights, run the descaling programme with at least 500 ml of Melitta Anti Calc for filter machines: it takes about 25 minutes, must not be interrupted, and is followed by two rinses. The manual names the liquid; Melitta UK sells a 240 g Anti Calc powder for filter machines and kettles instead (article 6762482). Wash the jug and filter insert after every use; the insert and the tank lid can go in the dishwasher.

Who should look elsewhere

If you buy whole beans, the Melitta AromaFresh Pro X grinds and brews in one machine, though it is taller and keeps coffee on a hotplate. For a bigger thermal batch and adjustable brewing, the Sage Luxe Brewer Thermal holds 1.8 litres.

Compare it with every filter coffee machine we track, read which type of coffee machine suits you, or see how often to descale in a hard-water area.

Melitta LOOK V Therm Timer questions

What does the red CALC lamp mean on a Melitta LOOK?

It means the machine is due a descale. Pour at least 500 ml of Melitta Anti Calc for filter machines into the tank and start the descaling programme, which takes about 25 minutes and must not be interrupted. Then rinse twice: fill to the 10/15-cup mark with tap water and run it with the filter insert in place but no paper or coffee.

How do I set the water hardness on the LOOK V Therm Timer?

Hold the CALC button and press the minutes button to change the level; there are four. The machine leaves the factory on the hardest, so set it to your own water’s level and the reminder will suit your supply. Your water company gives the figure for your address: the Drinking Water Inspectorate’s map shows only typical levels for England and Wales.

Which filter papers does the Melitta LOOK V Therm Timer take?

Melitta size 1×4 papers, the common cone size, one per brew. Melitta suggests about 6–8 g of ground coffee per large cup with the AromaSelector in the middle position, then turning it clockwise for milder coffee or anticlockwise for stronger. Never fill the tank past the 10/15-cup mark, because the machine brews all the water and the jug would overflow.

How do I set the timer on the LOOK V Therm Timer?

Set the clock first: it flashes after the machine is plugged in, and the machine will not brew until it is set. Then hold TIMER, set the start time with the hour and minute buttons, and press TIMER again to arm it for the next brew; a white lamp shows it is on. Unplugging clears both the clock and the timer.

How do I look after the insulated jug?

Wash it after every use, and keep it away from the microwave and the hob, both of which Melitta’s manual rules out. The manual also says not to store milk or baby food in it and not to lay it down when full. It lists only the filter insert and the water tank lid as dishwasher-safe, so the jug is not among them.
